The method comprises locating a cutting insert (10) in the digital image (9); detecting the main cutting edge (16a); cutting a region (17) containing the main cutting edge (16a), obtaining a wear region (19); describe the wear region (19) by means of shape descriptors, generating a vector of characteristics; classify the wear region (19) into categories using the vector of characteristics of the wear region (19) and a supervised learning algorithm; determine the state of the cutting insert (10) according to the classification of the wear region (19).
